Teck Resources Limited reported that a flash fire occurred in the dryer complex at Teck’s Greenhills Operation near Elkford British Columbia Sunday at approximately 11:00 a.m. Mountain Time.
The fire was quickly extinguished. All employees, visitors and contractors at site have been accounted for. Three employees have received non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the incident is not known at this time.
Appropriate regulatory authorities have been notified and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident. There is no major impact to the operation.
Media reports indicate that two of the injured workers were airlifted to Foothills hospital in Calgary with severe burns and the third worker was treated and released from the local hospital.
In June 2010, four employees had to be treated for smoke inhalation in similar drying facility blast. At the time, Teck said the blast caused extensive damage to the building and forced a temporary shutdown of the mine.
Greenhills is one of Teck's biggest coal mining operations in the Elk Valley.
