The Mining Suppliers Association of BC recently donated $35,000 to MineralsEd, a minerals and mining resources education program designed to support and educate B.C. teachers and their students on the benefits of industry.

MineralsEd is an offshoot for the original school education program, which was launched back in the early 1990’s. It had the goal of increasing the knowledge base in B.C.’s schools about minerals and mining.

The MineralsEd program recognized that despite modern society’s increased reliance on mineral resources, the mineral extraction industry was commonly misrepresented and negatively perceived.

Today’s MineralsEd program is a result of corroboration between the BC Ministry of Education and the BC Teacher Federation whereby classroom teachers write and develop materials for students and the mining industry supports all aspects of the program’s development and maintenance.

The program is supported and sustained by industry donations and in-kind contributions including a five-year pledge from Teck Resources of $200,000 annually. The MineralsEd tag was developed in 2012.

MineralsEd estimates it has assisted more than 7,900 educators since 1991, who in the same period of time taught minerals, mining and Earth science units in their K-12 classrooms to more than 725,000 students.
