Each year, MABC presents the Mining Person of the Year Award to publicly recognize an outstanding individual who has shown leadership in advancing and promoting the mining industry in British Columbia. This year, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to mining industry charities and advocacy initiatives, MABC is pleased to recognize the many efforts of Dave Sharples, from SMS Equipment.
Dave has extensive experience in the mining industry, both in B.C. and globally, having been involved with the industry since 1967. In 2003 Dave joined Transwest Mining Systems, which became SMS Equipment in 2007 and remains on with SMS Equipment as a business development consultant.
Since joining SMS Equipment, Dave has become heavily involved in mining industry organizations and is well known in the mining community due to his work with many charitable organizations and fundraising activities. He sits as a Director of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame and continues to be an active supporter of B.C. Mining Week and Mining for Miracles, in support of the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. He is an active member of the Mining Suppliers Association (MSABC) and, in the capacity of Chair in 2010, led the association through a period expansion with increased efforts and initiatives in membership, public awareness and advocacy.
“Dave’s longtime involvement with the Mining Suppliers Association of BC has been integral to the growth and success of this important advocacy organization”, said Karina Briño, President and CEO of the Mining Association of BC. “With his support MSABC has positioned itself as a leading industry association representing the interests of the hundreds of mining supplier companies throughout BC”.
The Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines, recognized Dave Sharples' important charitable role in the BC mining community, “Dave’s longstanding involvement with Fishing for Kids, and now ‘Hooked on Miracles’ and Mining for Miracles, demonstrates his dedication to giving back. It is a true testament to his commitment to the industry and the province”.
More than 100 members of the BC mining community came together at the BC Mining Week Kickoff Reception where Dave Sharples was honoured.
