A Memoir: History of a Pipe Dream by Susan Miller.
Here's a book that many in the mining and industrial sectors will find to be an interesting read.
Susan Miller has worked in industrial construction for the past 27 years—a career that requires her to job hop around the U.S. regularly. Her home and husband are based in Cody, Wyoming, but this summer, for example, she's on a job site in Texas. Her new memoir, History of a Pipe Dream, is a collection of stories from her career, including stories of love found and lost because of the demands of her job.
Miller's new book is the story of her struggle to overcome gender-specific prejudice in the workplace.
"I've had many jobs in my life, but none have given me the satisfaction that I get from my career as a pipefitter," Miller said. "I get a great deal of gratification from installing pipe systems, but even after 20-plus years in the business, I still have to devise ways to overcome discrimination and prove my abilities."
She started out a common labourer and worked her way up to journeyman, and along the way, she got to know people from all walks of life. Some amused her, some inspired her, but most just stood in her way.
