Mount Polley mine tailings dam failure was a serious incident.

The Mining Association of B.C. (MABC) is currently reviewing the Independent Expert Engineering Panel Review Report of the Mount Polley tailings dam breach, delivered today.

The tailings dam failure at the Mount Polley mine was a serious incident and we appreciate the work of the Independent Panel in finding out what happened. MABC and its member companies are wholly committed to safety, environmental stewardship and public responsiveness. Safety is the number one priority of the mining industry.

“MABC thanks the panel for their report; understanding the cause of the failure enables our members to review industry best practices and protocols to ensure the highest standards are being met at facilities across the province”, commented Karina Briño, President and CEO of the Mining Association of B.C.

B.C.’s mining operators are committed to the responsible management of tailings facilities to ensure the safety of communities, employees and the environment. In addition to adhering to British Columbia’s world leading regulatory framework, MABC is also one of two provincial mining associations to have signed on to the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative and is in the process of working with its members on implementation.

“We and our member companies are reviewing the recommendations from the panel and will continue to work with government, First Nations and the public to ensure British Columbians can be confident in the mining industry”, Briño concluded.
