On June 19, at 9 a.m., Donald R. Lindsay, CEO of Teck Resources Limited, will be recognized with an Honorary Doctorate of Technology at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) spring convocation ceremony. This degree is presented to individuals who are widely acknowledged for outstanding and sustained achievement in their area of expertise and endeavour.
Past BCIT Honorary Doctorate recipients include Marc Garneau, Jack Munro, Tony Parsons, Mike Holmes, Chief Sean Atleo, Mike Harcourt, and Tamara Vrooman to name a few.
“It is truly an honour to receive this recognition from BCIT and to be a part of the spring convocation ceremonies,” said Don Lindsay, president and CEO of Teck. “The contribution that BCIT graduates make to our communities, our economy and technology innovation demonstrates that education is one of the greatest investments we can make in our society.”
Don was appointed president of Teck in January 2005 and assumed the additional responsibility of CEO in April 2005. Before joining Teck, he was president of CIBC World Markets and led the bank’s Investment and Corporate Banking Division and its Asia Pacific Region. Earlier in his career, Don was responsible for CIBC’s Global Mining Group. He has a B.Sc. (Hons.) in mining engineering from Queens University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Currently a Governor of the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation in Vancouver, Don is also chair of the Campaign for B.C. Children, a capital campaign aimed at raising $200 million for a new acute care hospital in Vancouver.
Don has been the division chair for Natural Resources for the United Way of the Lower Mainland in British Columbia and, for several years, he was a member of the United Way’s Major Individual Giving Cabinet in Toronto.
In October 2011, Don was appointed to the Economic Advisory Council to the federal Minister of Finance, which provides advice to the Government of Canada on a broad range of fiscal, economic and financial issues.
As chair of the International Zinc Association from 2007 to 2011, Don led the development and launch of the Zinc Saves Kids campaign, a program developed in partnership with UNICEF to address zinc deficiency, which claims the lives of about 450,000 children annually around the world. Under his leadership, Teck also launched a Zinc and Health program to raise awareness about zinc deficiency and help solve this global health issue.
