Communication can save lives

Communication can save lives

Finding deposits of natural resources and precious metals can take mineral explorers out into wild and rugged country where communication is often sparse or non-existent.

Thanks to constantly evolving satellite communications technology, GeoPro LBS Inc. has developed the GeoPro, a two-way satellite text-messaging device that allows companies to monitor and communicate with employees in the field anywhere in the world.

“We built this as a tool for field workers with input from field workers,” said Jeff Wilson, director of product development with the company.

The system uses the GeoPro Messenger, a handheld messaging unit with built-in GPS, a covered emergency button and the capability to message up to 160 characters over a secure IP and global network.

Complementing the Messenger is the GeoPro Web Application, which uses the Iridium satellite network to allow real-time communication between field workers and employee managers outside cellular coverage zones.

The web application features secure, browser-based access to emergency, check-in, tracking and waypoint options.

The system has a feature that alerts supervisors if a field worker fails to check in on a regular schedule; it also has the capability to track GeoPro Messenger users in real time.
