Canadian companies can play too!
The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) has officially opened applications for the 2025 TechX Clean Energy Accelerator, offering a substantial £500K in grant funding. This program is designed to support start-ups from around the world with innovative clean energy solutions, providing up to £50,000 for each of the 10 selected companies. If you’re a start-up with a game-changing idea in clean energy, this accelerator could provide the boost you need to scale up.
What’s on Offer?
The TechX Accelerator isn't just about the funding. It's about accelerating growth through expert mentorship, tailored technology development guidance, and robust commercial support. Successful applicants will gain access to NZTC’s expansive network, which includes advisors, investors, energy operators, and key supply-chain partners. This program aims to turn promising ideas into tangible solutions for a sustainable future.
Who Should Apply?
NZTC is seeking start-ups that are advancing technologies at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) three to six, particularly in the following focus areas:
- Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) & Methane Capture
- Low Carbon Hydrogen
- Alternative Fuels
- Renewable Energy
If your start-up is developing solutions in these areas, the TechX Accelerator offers a unique opportunity to scale up with the support of industry experts and potential investors.
Why Does This Matter to Us in Canada?
You might wonder, "We're in Canada... why does this matter?" Well, Canada's own clean energy landscape is evolving rapidly, with significant investments and a growing focus on sustainable technologies. Programs like the TechX Accelerator, though based in the UK, provide Canadian start-ups with global exposure and collaboration opportunities. The ability to engage with international markets, investors, and cutting-edge technologies can be a game-changer for Canadian companies looking to expand their reach and impact.
Furthermore, Canada and the UK share a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, and international partnerships are crucial in developing the innovations needed to tackle climate change on a global scale. Participation in such programs can provide Canadian start-ups with the resources and connections they need to drive forward the clean energy transition both at home and abroad.
A Proven Track Record of Success
The TechX Clean Energy Accelerator, now in its seventh year, has a strong track record. Nearly 70 start-ups have benefited from the program, collectively raising over £106M in equity and generating £27.3M in revenue. These companies are not only thriving in the marketplace but are also making significant contributions to reducing global carbon emissions—potentially saving 20-25 million tonnes of CO2e annually by 2030.
Voices from the Top
Mark Anderson, Chief Acceleration Officer and TechX Director, is enthusiastic about the innovations that come through the program each year:
“The disruptive nature of start-ups makes them key players in discovering and advancing the new technologies required to reach net zero. I look forward to welcoming our next cohort of promising start-ups, who will undoubtedly contribute to a cleaner, more resilient, and affordable energy future.”
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes also emphasized the importance of innovation in clean energy:
“Scotland is well-positioned to capitalize on the enormous opportunities that established clean energy technologies are already delivering. The TechX programme continues to be an important catalyst in helping start-up businesses unlock this new innovation as part of our transition to net zero.”
