TORONTO, June 8, 2016 /CNW/ - Superior Propane, Canada's largest propane provider, responded to the Ontario government's Climate Change Action Plan today applauding the government for its serious approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and emphasizing that government must create more and better choices in its approach to meeting its goals. Today, propane provides a ready, off-the-shelf, affordable solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the province, making it a viable solution to meeting carbon reduction targets.
Superior welcomed the government's approach to levelling the playing field for low-carbon fuels, encouraging vehicles to switch to propane, among other conversion options, to lower their carbon footprint. The same approach should also be applied for businesses converting auto fleets to propane. As the government addresses its net-zero carbon goals for buildings and homes, it should provide Ontarians tools and support to help them decide on the lower-carbon fuel of their choice.
Superior was pleased with the increased level of consultation with energy and transportation industry participants to improve the structure and viability of the plan and looks forward to working with government on the implementation of these forward-looking programs.
Superior also stressed that this level of consultation and fair treatment of all forms of lower-carbon fuels should be applied to all aspects of the province's energy mix. Prior to the release of its Climate Change Action Plan, the government directed the Ontario Energy Board to pursue expanding natural gas infrastructure in areas that had previously proven to be uneconomic. The project would consider levying all Ontario rate payers to fund this expansion, resulting in higher energy bills for all Ontario consumers. This is an approach that is inconsistent with the government's consultative approach to its Climate Change Action Plan as it ignores the fact that propane is readily available in these areas today and has a comparable carbon footprint to natural gas.
Leadership at Superior propane applauded the government for its thoughtful plan to tackle climate change and called on the government to offer the same fairness in its approach to the Ontario Energy Board: "As a clean burning fuel like natural gas, propane can play a key role in presenting innovative solutions to reducing emissions," says Superior Propane President Greg McCamus. "Whether it is retrofitting homes and converting them from oil to propane or converting automobile and trucking fleets from higher carbon fuels, propane can be a partner in reducing Ontario's emissions and it can do so now, without the need for expensive and lengthy infrastructure investments and associated environmental impacts."
