Red Eagle Mining Corp. specializes in gold exploration and development in Colombia, currently drilling in Santa Rosa and Pavo Real.

Santa Rosa and Pavo Real are located in the Antioquia Batholish and mid-Cauca gold belt. Both properties have received concessions for being declared gold exploration projects at the advanced stage.

“I founded the company two years ago and it’s been great,” said Ian Slater, CEO of Red Eagle Mining. “I really love what I’m doing and I love working in Colombia as well.”

Exploration in Colombia struggled to get going because of political unrest during the country's civil war, but Slater said that roughly five years ago the industry took off in Colombia.

"Colombia had no modern exploration until now because of their troubles," said Slater. "But, the former president, when he was in for two terms, he really turned the country around. First the oil companies went in there and then mining. Five years ago is really when we got a critical mass."

Slater enjoys working at the properties owned by Red Eagle in Colombia for a number of reasons, but he noted that having a good infrastructure with power and water readily available is a major benefit.

“It’s a great place,” said Slater. “I feel really safe there. I think it’s like any other place in South America—you wouldn’t want to go into some neighbourhoods, but overall, it’s a nice place to work.”

Slater said that Red Eagle Mining Corp. owns properties in two of the best areas you could find in Colombia.

“They’re in areas that are safe and they’re not environmentally sensitive and we have a social licence to operate from the communities,” said Slater. “There’s water and power, and it’s a historic mining district so there’s lots of labour available.”

Red Eagle Mining Corp. employs as many as 90 people, and only two of them aren’t locals.

“We have almost all local Colombian (employees) except one project manager in Santa Rosa,” said Slater, “and now our new exploration vice-president; other than that everyone else is Colombian.”

The area is easily accessible and the gold exploration and development projects in the area have gone over extremely well with the locals.

“The communities where we are, like in Santa Rosa, are really welcoming,” said Slater. “When you’re driving from town into the project people are on their front porch waving—it’s great. They like us because we build roads. You know, the roads at everyone’s ranches were just mud so we put lots of gravel on them and they love it because now they can drive to their houses instead of walking through the mud.”
