Aug 4, 2016 ‐‐‐‐ The global mining sector recognizes the increasingly important role that renewable energy is playing in driving the competitiveness and sustainability of the resource sector. Over 40 senior mining leaders are already confirmed to meet with renewable energy experts at Energy and Mines World Congress on Nov 21‐22 in Toronto. This is the 4th annual event focused on collaboration between mining and renewables to drive down energy prices, secure power costs, reduce carbon exposure and boost social license for mines. This year’s Congress features case studies and expert views from mining operators from North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Lightsource Renewable Energy is the in association sponsor of the Congress which offers a complete picture of new business and collaboration opportunities for renewables for mines. New drivers, new projects and, importantly, renewed interest in renewables for mines are reflected in this year’s high‐caliber agenda. Specifically, gold companies with remote operations are showing strong interest in moving forward with renewable energy projects to save on diesel costs. Additionally, mine rehabilitation and carbon mitigation and offsetting are becoming key drivers for mines to consider renewables investments.
New renewables projects and case studies from mining leaders including Avalon Advanced Materials, Goldcorp, Barrick Gold, Newmont, IAMGOLD, Sandfire, AurCrest Gold and Gold Fields will be presented at the Congress in November. Senior mining leaders from Algold, Chilean Metals, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited, Giyani Gold, IAMGOLD, New Gold, KGHM Chile, Orezone Gold, and Primero Mining will also be participating in interactive panel discussions.
The Congress agenda features presentations and insights from renewables and mining energy leaders including Lightsource Renewable Energy, the International Energy Agency, SkyPower Global, Alterra Power, juwi Renewable Energy, Homer Energy, ClearBlue Markets, TUGLIQ Energy, Aggreko, Wärtsilä, THEnergy, Lux Research, Qinous, Sigma Energy, ESS, Fluidic Energy, and Torys LLP. Alongside the Congress, Energy and Mines is hosting the inaugural Awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of companies and individuals who have demonstrated leadership and innovation in renewables for mines. Winners will be selected through a combination of Energy and Mines Global Rankings to identify the top major and junior mines in terms of their use of renewables and a selection process completed by a distinguished advisory panel. Awards will be presented at the Energy and Mines Awards gala reception on the first evening of the Congress.
“Energy sits at the heart of many of the key challenges mines are facing around operational costs, social license, carbon regulation and, more generally, their ability to compete,” said Adrienne Baker, Director of Energy and Mines. “This is why it is imperative to find sustainable, affordable energy solutions for remote and grid‐powered mines which is our aim with this Congress and through our research, Rankings and Awards.”
