CIM 2014 convention in Vancouver May 11 to 14

The theme at this year’s CIM convention is Mining 4 Everyone, meant to address the diversity of people whose competencies are valued by the mining industry.

“Industry pioneers, young leaders, women in mining, aboriginal communities, immigrants, students, and the general public come together to celebrate the changing face of the mining work force,” said Lise Bujold, CIM’s director of conventions and trade shows. “The CIM convention takes place during BC Mining Week this year, and both organizing committees are working closely to bring participants together and enhance all delegates’ experiences.”

The schedule includes an engaging series of workshops and technical sessions, as well as field trips, social events and evening galas.

“The CIM plenary is a powerful kick-off session to a content-rich technical program,” said Bujold. “This sets the tone at a very high level and gives first time attendees a taste of the quality world leaders who accept CIM’s invitation to speak.”

This year’s impressive line-up of plenary speakers includes the Honorable Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women; Edward (Ted) Thomas, Executive Director, Devonshire Initiative; Alice Wong, Senior Vice-President and Chief Corporate Officer, CAMECO; Oumar Toguyeni, Regional Vice-President, West Africa, IAMGOLD; and John M McGagh, Head of Innovation—Technology and Innovation, Rio Tinto. Each panellist will speak directly to the theme, sharing their experiences, learning and success stories. Mark Kelley, Gemini award-winning journalist, will act as moderator.

New this year are Technical Program Tracks, in Global Dimensions of Mining Innovations, Harnessing our Diverse World, Construction to Production, Managing Operations from Mine to Mill, Rock Engineering and Mine Design, an Ethics in Mining symposium, Management and Finance Day and a student poster competition. A comprehensive student program offers the ultimate opportunity for peer and professional networking while delivering educational and informative learning material. Students and industry veterans alike won’t want to miss the poster competition, which showcases the talents and skills of up-and-coming mining professionals focused on every aspect of the industry from geology to production to sustainability.

Meet and mingle with buyers, planners, engineers, researchers and other technical experts, managers, directors and equipment and service suppliers at the Expo, where all the innovative action happens. Bujold said there is no doubt delegates will take away knowledge and best practices from the CIM 2014 Convention.

“CIM authors and presenters are seriously dedicated to discussing current trends and opportunities, new practices, sustainability and change,” she said. “And, while the technical content and networking motivate attendees from over 40 countries to attend, the business aspect of the convention increasingly attracts mining company and industry decision makers and executives.
